About the Artist
Originally from Pennsylvania and now residing on the North Shore of Oahu since 2008, Steven Kean is an accomplished artist and art educator specializing in the woodcut method of relief printmaking. His work is driven by a deep passion for both the artistic process and the ocean, which serves as a constant source of inspiration.
Kean’s art has been showcased internationally, throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and across the continental United States. In January 2024, he held his sixth solo exhibition ‘Playing with Sand’ presenting his latest collection of woodcut prints. Later that year was invited into a group show celebrating today’s surf culture - ‘The Swell is Coming’ at Hō'ikeākea Gallery. For the first time, Kean showcased his carved wooden blocks alongside leading artists from Hawaii and around the world. He was also invited into the 2024 Pacific States Biennial (Hilo, HI) and the 96th Annual Honolulu Printmakers Exhibition.
Steven has been featured in publications such as FLUX Hawaii, Sunset, Shout Out LA and Hawaiian Airlines’ Hana Hou! in-flight magazine. His art can be found in various hotels throughout the Hawaiian Islands including Four Seasons Ko Olina, Waikiki Malia, Hilton Hawaiian Village Rainbow Tower, and others, as well as in Nassau, Bahamas at Baha Mar Luxury Resort.
Over the years, he has been involved in several high-profile commissioned projects with brands such as Google, Starbucks, Four Seasons, Vans, Olukai, Kahala MKT by Foodland Hawaii and Hawaii Tourism Japan. His work is also on permanent display in various locations around Oahu, and he was honored to be the featured artist at the 2016 and 2023 Haleiwa Arts Festival. In 2017 Kean was selected as the official artist for the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, a career highlight.
Beyond his artistic practice, Kean is dedicated to sharing his passion for art with the youth of Hawaii. Since 2018, he has been on the Teaching Artist Roster with the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Over the years, Steven has lead art programs with a variety of elementary and secondary schools and at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
