About the Artist: 

Katalina YJ Kim, a local architectural designer born and raised on O‘ahu, creates works that celebrate the beauty of everyday, often-overlooked moments in urban life. Drawing inspiration from books like Super Normal by Naoto Fukasawa & Jasper Morrison, Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Woods, and Bruno Munari’s Design as Art, she combines the observational sensibilities of street photography and watercolor painting to depict ordinary scenes in vibrant, limited color palettes. Using analog cameras or her phone, she captures hidden moments in the city, a process deeply influenced by the candid dynamism of Saul Leiter and Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as the atmospheric stillness of Edward Hopper’s work, particularly his use of light and perspective.
