Waikaua is the first publication of Awaiauluʻs newest project, Kākoʻi, or Adze Maker. The stories told within Waikaua are based upon Kamakau’s writings and supplemented with details found in other accounts written by John Papa ʻĪʻī, Joseph Mokuʻōhai Poepoe, and Stephen Langhern Desha. Where possible, details like characters’ appearance and attire are based on historical fact. Great lengths have been taken to provide a historically accurate account of Ka Moʻolelo o Kamehameha I. However, the authors and artists did have creative license as they crafted this story. Future publications will continue to carve great stories from Hawaiʻi's rich history.
